Dental
Dental coverage for preventive care, basic and major services and orthodontia.
You’re eligible to enroll yourself and eligible dependents in dental coverage if you’re regularly scheduled to work at least:
- All hospitals and member organizations except Johns Hopkins Care at Home: 20 hours per week.
- Johns Hopkins Care at Home only: 30 hours per week.
All employees except Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital employees have two dental plan options through Delta Dental:
- Comprehensive Plan
- High Plan
Both plans cover preventive, basic and major services, but only the High Plan includes coverage for orthodontic care.
If you’re a Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital employee, you can enroll in the Cigna Allegiance dental plan.
If you’re a Suburban Hospital employee, the Kaiser HMO medical plan includes dental coverage through Dominion Dental for adult preventive care. You pay a $30 copay for each covered preventive care visit.

What the plan pays when you receive care
The deductible is the amount you pay before the plan starts to pay. The annual maximum is the most the plan will pay for covered expenses each plan year. These limits reset annually on Jan. 1.
Once you meet the deductible, the plan shares the cost of care with you. You’ll pay a percentage of the cost, called coinsurance, for covered services1:
- Preventive: Exams, cleanings, X-rays and sealants.
- Basic: Fillings and oral surgery.
- Major: Crowns, inlays, onlays and prosthodontics2.
- Orthodontia: Coverage for adults and dependent children.
The tables below reflect the amount the plan pays for in-network and out-of-network providers.

1 Reimbursement is based on Delta Dental contract allowances and not necessarily each dentist’s actual fees. Reimbursement for PPO or non-Delta Dental dentists is based on PPO contracted fees, and Premier are based on Premier contracted fees.
2 There is a 12-month waiting period before your benefits will cover prosthodontia.
No ID card? No problem.
You don’t need a physical ID card to use your dental insurance. The dental provider can verify your coverage using your name, birth date and an ID, or your social security number. If you prefer a card, sign into your Delta Dental account or Allegiance account to access an electronic card or print a paper copy.
Cost for coverage
You pay for dental coverage through biweekly paycheck deductions. The amount you pay is determined by who you cover and whether you’re a full-time or part-time employee.
How to enroll
You can enroll in dental insurance on SmartSource as a new hire, during open enrollment or if you experience a qualifying life event.
Coverage begins the first of the month following the date you were hired or became eligible for benefits.
Paying for dental care expenses
You can contribute pre-tax to a health care flexible spending account (FSA) to pay eligible dental expenses.
If you use an out-of-network provider, you’ll pay for services out of pocket and submit a reimbursement request.
