As a new hire or newly eligible employee, be sure to explore all the benefits available to you and your family. All your benefits information is available on this myBenefits website — available any time, from any device.

Before you enroll, please view:
- Eligibility: See which benefits you and your dependents are eligible for based on how many hours you’re regularly scheduled to work, your hospital or member organization and your union status.
- Cost for coverage: View biweekly employee contributions for medical, dental and vision insurance.
What benefits to enroll in and when
You have 30 days from the date you were hired or became eligible for benefits to enroll in:
- Medical, dental and vision insurance
- Health and dependent care flexible spending accounts
- Supplemental life, dependent life and whole life insurance
- Accident, critical illness and hospital indemnity insurance
- Prepaid legal services
You’re automatically enrolled in these benefits:
- Basic life and accidental death and dismemberment insurance
- Short- and long-term disability insurance
And you can enroll in these benefits any time:
- Identity theft and fraud protection
- Auto, home, renters and pet insurance
- Long-term care insurance
- Commuter benefits
Enrolling in the JHHS retirement plan
Most employees are automatically enrolled in the JHHS retirement plan, but employees at some hospitals and member organizations need to manually enroll. View retirement plan details.
Get help picking benefits
If you’re a Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital employee, talk to ALEX, an online benefit counselor, to understand all your benefit options and get help picking the right ones for you and your family. ALEX will provide personalized recommendations to help you make confident, informed choices.

How to enroll
When you’re ready to enroll, make your elections on SmartSource:
- Sign into SmartSource using your work credentials.
- Follow the instructions on each screen to choose your benefits.
- Select Check Out to complete your enrollment.
If you enroll dependents, you need to upload these documents to SmartSource to verify your relationship:
- Certified marriage license for your spouse
- Birth certificate or adoption papers for your children
Social security cards and uncertified marriage licenses are not accepted.

Save your confirmation statement
After you enroll, view and save your confirmation statement on SmartSource:
- Sign into SmartSource using your work credentials.
- Select Go to enter the Benefits Marketplace.
- Select Current Benefits under the Benefits dropdown on the left.
- Choose download, email or print and save the statement for your records.
Frequently asked questions
How do I find my JHED ID?
Follow these steps to find your JHED ID:
- Visit jh.edu from any Johns Hopkins computer.
- Enter your name in the JH Enterprise Directory search box at the top right.
- Select your name from the search results. Your JHED ID will be displayed near the top of the page.
If you’re unable to access a Johns Hopkins computer or don’t find your name in the directory, call the IT help desk at 410-955-4357.
What happens if I don’t enroll by the deadline?
If you don’t enroll within 30 days of the date you were hired or became eligible, you won’t be covered by JHHS’ medical, dental and vision plans or additional life insurance options.
Your next opportunity to enroll will be during the next open enrollment period (usually in October), unless you have a qualifying life event.
