The benefits you’re eligible for depend on how many hours you’re regularly scheduled to work, your hospital or member organization and your union status.
Employee eligibility
Your hospital, member organization or union status may affect your eligibility for certain benefits. More eligibility details are available on the myBenefits page for each benefit.

Benefits available to all employees
These benefits are available to all employees:
- Johns Hopkins Employee Assistance Program (JHEAP)
- Retirement account
- Employee discount program
If you work 30+ hours per week
You’re eligible for all benefits on this site if you regularly work at least 30 hours per week, unless otherwise noted.
If you work 20–29 hours per week
You’re eligible for all benefits on this site except:
- All hospitals and member organizations: Dependent child tuition assistance and paid parental leave.
- Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital: Extended illness bank.
- Johns Hopkins Care at Home: Medical, dental and vision insurance, flexible spending accounts and employee tuition assistance.
Changes to eligibility
If you transition to a new job or the number of hours you’re regularly scheduled to work changes, your eligibility for certain benefits may change.
Dependent eligibility
Eligible dependents include:
- Children up to age 26, unless they’re disabled.
- Legal spouse, unless they’re also employed by a Johns Hopkins Medicine affiliate – they can’t be enrolled as an employee and a dependent.
You can enroll eligible dependents in these benefits if you’re also enrolled:
- Medical, dental and vision insurance
- Accident, critical illness and hospital indemnity insurance
- Long-term care insurance
- Identity theft and fraud protection
You can also enroll eligible dependents in these benefits, regardless of if you’re enrolled:
- Dependent life insurance
- Whole life insurance
When your benefits begin
Here is when benefits go into effect starting from the date you were hired or became eligible.
First of the following month
If you enroll in these benefits as a new hire or newly eligible employee, coverage begins the first of the month following the date you were hired or became eligible.
- Medical, dental and vision insurance (except Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital)
- Flexible spending accounts
- Basic and supplemental life insurance
- Dependent life insurance
- Whole life insurance
- Accident, critical illness and hospital indemnity insurance
- Identity theft and fraud protection
- Prepaid legal services
- Long-term disability
After 90 days
- Paid time off (PTO). You’ll begin accruing PTO on the date you were hired or became eligible, but there is a 90-day waiting period before you can use it.
- Short-term disability
After 12 months
You must complete 12 months of consecutive benefits-eligible employment to qualify for paid parental leave.
Other
- Long-term care: Coverage begins the first of the month following the month in which you enrolled.
- Dependent tuition assistance: Depending on your hospital or member organization, you may need to complete two to four years of continuous employment before you’re eligible.
