Leaving Johns Hopkins
See what happens to your benefits if your employment ends.
If your employment with Johns Hopkins Health System ends, it’s important to know which benefits will end and when, which benefits you can continue and which benefits you’ll keep.
Most benefits will end on your last day of employment or the last day of the month in which you were employed. You can choose to continue some benefits directly with the provider or through COBRA.
Any remaining contributions for benefits coverage will be deducted from your final paycheck. The amount deducted may be more than usual to ensure medical, dental and vision coverage remains active through the end of the month.
Benefits that end on your last day
These benefits end on your last day of employment and can’t be continued:
- Flexible spending accounts (claims incurred before your employment ends will be reimbursed if submitted within 90 days of your last day of employment)
- Short- and long-term disability
These benefits end on your last day of employment, unless you choose to continue coverage:
- Life and accidental death and dismemberment insurance
- Dependent life insurance
- Whole life insurance
- Accident, critical illness and hospital indemnity insurance
- Identity theft and fraud protection
- Prepaid legal services
- Auto, home, renters and pet insurance
- Long-term care insurance
Contact the appropriate provider directly to set up an individual policy and payment.
Benefits that end on the last day of the month
Your Johns Hopkins medical, dental and vision insurance ends on the last day of the month in which you’re employed, unless you choose to continue coverage for yourself and your dependents through COBRA.
You’ll receive COBRA information in the mail a couple of weeks after your last day of employment. Make sure your home address is up to date in Employee Self Service (ESS) .
