Financial and Legal Services

Support for personal legal and financial matters.

Employees who regularly work at least 20 hours per week are eligible to enroll in prepaid legal services.

All employees can receive free financial and legal support through the Johns Hopkins Employee Assistance Program (JHEAP) and bank with Johns Hopkins Federal Credit Union.

Prepaid legal services

You, your spouse and your dependents can get legal assistance for personal legal matters from a large network of attorneys with MetLife prepaid legal services.

Choose from more than 18,000 in-network attorneys or work with your own attorney and get reimbursed for some or all the fees. There are no restrictions on how often you can use the plan, and you have an unlimited number of initial consultations for covered legal matters.

Visit the MetLife website for more details.

Covered legal matters

MetLife’s network attorneys can assist with the most frequently needed legal matters, such as:

  • Buying, selling or renting a home
  • Marriage, divorce, adoption and guardianship
  • Bankruptcy, debt collection and tax audits
  • Elder care, powers of attorney, wills and trusts
  • Traffic tickets and DUI license suspension
  • Immigration, affidavits and personal property protection

Digital estate planning

You can create wills, living wills and powers of attorney online in as little as 15 minutes and use MetLife’s video notary feature (where available) to sign and notarize your documents.

Cost for coverage

You pay $15 per month (about $7 per paycheck) for prepaid legal services through payroll deductions.

How to enroll

You can enroll in prepaid legal services on SmartSource as a new hire, during open enrollment or if you experience a qualifying life event.

Coverage begins the first of the month following the date you were hired or became eligible for benefits.

Free financial and legal support

You have free access through the Johns Hopkins Employee Assistance Program (JHEAP) to online resources that can help with things such as budgeting, estate planning, taxes, managing debt, hiring an attorney and more.

Visit the JHEAP website using company code JHEAP and select Centers > Legal/Financial.
