Discapacidad

Income replacement if you’re unable to work.

You’re eligible for disability benefits if you regularly work at least 20 hours per week.

Johns Hopkins Health System (JHHS) provides short-term disability at no cost to you. You’re automatically enrolled in employee-paid long-term disability.

Disability benefits replace a portion of your income if you’re unable to work for an extended period due to illness or injury.

  • Short-term disability (STD) replaces 60% of your biweekly base pay for up to 25 weeks of disability, after seven days.
  • Long-term disability (LTD) replaces 60% of your monthly base pay, up to a maximum of $10,000 per month, after you have been continuously disabled for 26 weeks. Benefits may continue up to normal retirement age or age 65 if MetLife certifies you as disabled.

Know your leave options

STD benefits run concurrently with family and medical leave (FMLA) or a health leave of absence (LOA). Learn about your leave options for when you need extended time away from work.

Costo de la cobertura

JHHS provides STD at no cost to you.

You pay 100% of the cost for LTD through payroll deductions.

Cómo inscribirse

You’re automatically enrolled in STD at no cost to you. Coverage begins after 90 days of employment.

You’re automatically enrolled in LTD as a new hire, which is 100% employee paid. Paycheck deductions begin the first of the month following your hire date or the day you became eligible.

  • If you don’t want LTD coverage, you can opt out on SmartSource as a new hire or during open enrollment.
  • If you opt out, you can re-enroll during the next open enrollment period, but you’ll be required to complete Evidence of Insurability through MetLife.

Return to work

Sedgwick and MetLife do not return employees to work. You must follow these steps through Occupational Health to return to work:

  1. Call Occupational Health two weeks before your expected return date to schedule an appointment to discuss returning to work. Occupational Health will tell you what documents you need.
  2. Get a note from your provider or physician with your return-to-work date and any restrictions or accommodations you may need and how long you may need them. Bring the return-to-work information from your provider or physician to your appointment with Occupational Health.
  3. Occupational Health will notify your manager or director if you have been cleared to return to work, with or without restrictions or accommodations.

If you’re not cleared to return to work, contact Sedgwick to extend your leave. If you are cleared, you must contact Sedgwick (short-term disability) and MetLife (long-term disability) to close out your leave and disability claims.
