Benefits for your commute to and from work.

Employees at certain hospitals and member organizations who regularly work at least 20 hours per week are eligible for pre-tax commuter benefits or subsidies.

The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins Health System

You can buy one of the following monthly commuting passes for the bus, Metro, and light rail through pre-tax paycheck deductions:

  • Regular: $77
  • Express: $93
  • Senior or Disability Pass (age 65+, photo ID required): $23

The cost of your pass is deducted from the first paycheck of the month for the next month’s pass. It may take up to 30 days from the date of your request for deductions to begin.

Suburban Hospital

Parking

All employees are eligible for free parking in the hospital garage.

Note: If you park in the garage, you’re not eligible for the transportation subsidy or payroll credit for biking or walking.

Bethesda Metro Station Shuttle

An employee shuttle runs daily between the hospital and the Bethesda Metro station, including holidays and weekends.

Public transportation subsidy

If you don’t drive and park in the garage, JHHS will provide a $125 monthly subsidy for public transportation expenses.

To receive the subsidy, you’ll need to create an account with SmarTrip and HealthEquity:

  • SmarTrip : Make sure to register your SmarTrip card using the 16-digit code on the back.
  • HealthEquity : Use the last four digits of your SSN to register.

Once you create these accounts, follow these steps to load the subsidy onto your SmarTrip card:

  1. Sign into your HealthEquity account .
  2. From the dashboard, select Transit.
  3. Under SmarTrip, select Transit Only SmarTrip Card Value.

You’ll receive a confirmation email after you complete your order.

Note: If you make changes to your order between the 1st and 10th of the month, your change will go into effect the 1st of the next month. All other orders will go into effect the following month. For example, changes made on Oct. 2 go into effect on Nov. 1 and changes made on Oct. 20 go into effect on Dec. 1.

Biking or walking

If you work the day shift, Monday-Friday, you can receive a $27.69 biweekly payroll credit if you bike or walk to work instead of driving and parking in the garage.

To receive the credit, email the Bike or Walk: Parking Declination Subsidy Application to [email protected].

If you want to park your bike at Suburban’s bike parking facilities, review and submit the Bike Parking Agreement .

Note: If you receive the payroll credit for biking or walking, you’re not eligible for free parking in the hospital garage.

Carpool

If you work the day shift, Monday-Friday, you can receive a $27.69 biweekly payroll credit if you carpool to work. If you receive the payroll credit for biking or walking, you’re not eligible for free parking in the hospital garage.

To receive the credit, email the Carpool Parking Registration Form to [email protected] .

Pre-tax commuter account

No matter how you get to work, you can contribute to a pre-tax commuter account to pay for eligible commuting expenses, like public transit fares and parking fees at a Metro station. You can start or stop making contributions at any time. The funds in the account are always yours.
